Upgrades to M2 are possible for two MacBooks, an iMac, and a Mac mini, MacBook Pro

New version of almost every Mac is expected in 2022

According to well-connected Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman, Apple plans to revamp six of its Mac models in 2022, starting with the MacBook Pro 2022 during an event next month.

According to Gurman’s newest Power On newsletter, he expects seven updates in six product categories in the near future.

Gurman argues that the Mac mini appears twice, first as M1 Pro and subsequently as M2 Pro. meantime, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac, and MacBook Air 2022 will all receive the new M2 processor, while a “bigger iMac Pro” will arrive with choices for the M1 Pro and the M1 Max.

The most exciting of all is a “half-sized Mac Pro” with “the equivalent of either two or four M1 Max processors,” which gives us a flavour of exactly how powerful Apple Silicon can go.”

At least one new Mac is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s planned March 8 event, according to Gurman, and he feels that the 13-inch MacBook Pro and/or the Mac mini are most probable candidates since they contain the oldest Apple silicon.

Given that the MacBook Air debuted at about the same time as the 2020 MacBook Pro, this also applies to it. The revamped model will be a “great Christmas seller” for later in the year, even though Apple had initially intended to release it towards the end of 2021 or in early 2022,” according to Gurman.

When Apple has already released M1 Pro and M1 Max, Gurman expects “another wave of Mac releases around May or June,” and he has been advised to anticipate “another series of Mac releases.” Specifically, WWDC takes place in the later half of the month.

M2 and I are here for you

When it comes to the Apple M2 chip, which will be used in many of the new devices, what can we expect? A little faster than the M1, Gurman predicts, but it “should keep the same eight-core design,” he adds. However, increasing the number of cores from seven or eight to nine or ten should boost graphics.

It’s the Mac Pro, though, that’s where the action begins. It seems to have two chip options: “one that quadruples the M1 Max’s capabilities” and “one that doubles the M1 Max’s capabilities.” First, there will supposedly be 20 CPU cores and 64 graphics cores, and thereafter there will be 40 and 128.

It gets a little speculative at the end, but given the trend so far, it’s hard to argue with Gurman’s logic: he predicts that the first M3 processor and Pro and Max variants of the M2 chip will appear in 2023.

On the AppleTrack website, Gurman has an 85.5 percent accuracy rate for his speculations about Apple. The iPhone SE 3 and iPad Air 5 will arrive next month, so we’ll find out whether these forecasts were accurate then.
