Apple appears to be taking steps to limit the likelihood of long wait periods for the iPhone 14 series as a result of manufacturing interruption among its major suppliers, given the disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak. But according to one report, because to Chinese Covid lockdowns, one of the four iPhone models is three weeks behind schedule(opens in new tab).

It has been reported that three of the four iPhone 14 variants are expected to rise in price, according to the reasonably reputable leaker LeaksApplePro.

Both the standard iPhone 14 and the larger iPhone 14 Max are expected to be priced at $799. The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, could cost $1,099, an increase of $100 over the $999 price of the iPhone 13 Pro. The price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to rise to $1,199. There is a good chance that this price increase will hurt the wallet, so we hope it isn’t true.

The normal iPhone 14 Pro will cost $1,099, according to another leaker, Shadow Leak on Twitter (opens in new tab). So it’s probable that this year’s Pros will be more expensive than last year’s.

When deciding between the iPhone 14 and 13, here are a few good reasons to go with the iPhone 13 right away rather than waiting for its successor, the iPhone 14. (opens in new tab).

iPhone 14 Max replacing iPhone 14 mini

As the iPhone 14 lineup is rumoured to be reshuffled in 2022, the iPhone small could go out of business. In addition to the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, there could be a larger iPhone 14 Max. As a result, there will be two standard-sized phones and two iPhone 14 variants with a larger screen.

Leak-tweeter and former Apple employee Jon Prosser echoed this sentiment, saying that the iPhone 14 Max will be the replacement for a tiny phone, with a 6.7-inch display but no pro capabilities and consequently a high price tag. A larger, more cheap iPhone could be precisely the thing for die-hard iPhone users, given the current trend toward larger smartphones.

According to yet another anonymous source, there will be two different iPhone 14 models: the normal and the Max. The iPhone 14 Max, in our opinion, will be a game-changer for Apple, and the speculated phone should cause concern among Apple’s rivals as a consequence.

The iPhone 14 isn’t the only significant upgrade from the iPhone 13 small, which is set to be discontinued. Here is a detailed comparison of what we know so far about what is expected to be the new iPhone 14 versus the iPhone 13.

iPhone 14 design

It will appear like an iPhone 12 crossed with an iPhone 4, according to Jon Prosser and his Front Page Tech video, in that it will have flat corners. There could also be a muted button and a group of rounded volume buttons, which are reminiscent of the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 14 is rumoured to be built of titanium, which would make it more durable and stronger than prior models, while the back of the phone would still be made of glass, but with a satin-like appearance.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo’s allegation that a larger module is required to house a 48MP camera on the iPhone 14 Pro, it doesn’t appear likely that the normal iPhone 14 will acquire a set of cameras flush with its rear panel.

Rumors claim that the iPhone 14 will finally get rid of the notch. According to current information, however, it’s looking like the notch will be absent from only the iPhone 14 Pro, which will instead feature a single circular camera cutout plus a pill-shaped cutout for the Face ID sensors. Even if the bezels are reduced, the display will appear even larger.

The display panels for all four iPhone 14 variants can be seen in what looks to be a leaked supply chain shot. There appears to be no notch on the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro max models, but instead, a pill-shaped cutout and what appears to be a punch hole to house either a camera or a sensor.

MySmartPrice also received CAD renderings of the ordinary iPhone 14 in the same way they did the Pro. The 6.7-inch screen on the iPhone 14 Max is expected to have the same design as the smaller screen on the iPhone 14.

These renders, as you can see, don’t look all that different from the current iPhone 13 model. The notch is still smaller, and the rear cameras are arranged in a diagonal pattern on the device. As a result, we’re left wondering what the iPhone 14 will actually be like.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max leaked by Max Weinbach, who is known for his honesty and integrity. Both depict a phone that is 0.2 millimetres thicker and has a greater camera bump. The schematics suggest that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be similar in height and width to their predecessors, which is surprising given how much larger they are. The new hole-punch/pill-shaped cuts can be seen in these schematics as well.

Leaked information concerning the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s largest next-generation flagship phone, appears to have divulged a lot of information about the device. To make the larger iPhone more slimline, or at least one that obtains the most screen space from its display without losing the sensor technology needed for successful and secure Face ID, it appears like Apple will perform a series of nips and tucks.

Macotakara, a Japanese site, has uploaded a video of mock-ups of the iPhone 14 from the Chinese site Alibaba. Both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have noticeable differences, but the larger camera module on the Pro models will demand new protective cases for both handsets as well.

One source has stated that there would be Midnight, Starlight, and Product RED colour options as normal, but the existing blue will be replaced with a lighter sky blue and a new purple option will also be included. It’s difficult to tell how credible that leak was now that it’s been removed. Artist Souta’s rendering of the iPhone 14 Pro in purple depicts how the purple colour would seem in reality. iPhone 14 display

With a 6.1-inch screen for the normal iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, and a 6.7-inch screen for the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max, we can expect a reshuffle in the iPhone 14 lineup. No more 5.4-inch minis, then?

If Shadow Leaks is to be believed, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will sport 6.68-inch screens (rounded up to 6.1 inches) (rounded up to 6.7 inches). In the same way as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max, this is the same. However, new bezels on the Pro models mean that they might grow to 6.12 and 6.69 inches in size, respectively.

All iPhone 14 models should feature a 120Hz refresh rate display, as seen on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, which is believed to be based on an LTPO panel or a development of that display technology.

Advertisements

Refresh rate of 120Hz has been reported in supply chain rumours for the next iPhone 14 Max, which could also be called the iPhone 14 Plus. Even if the normal iPhone 14 isn’t upgraded to a quicker refresh rate, LG appears to be the screen manufacturer in this situation.

LTPS displays are expected to be used in at least one iPhone 14 model, according to a report from The Elec(opens in a new tab). The lack of a fast-refreshing display on the basic iPhone 14 has been reinforced by subsequent supply chain reports.

According to new reports, Apple is expected to use an improved 90Hz refresh rate for its regular iPhone 14 models, which would be a significant upgrade above 60Hz displays, but not quite the speedy 120Hz refresh rate that we’d prefer. This depressing rumour about the specs has been corroborated by a second source.

Advertisements

Given that an always-on display was rumoured for the iPhone 13 but never found its way into the iPhone 14, this seems like a sensible addition to the iPhone 14.

OLED panel supplier BOE has been accused of cheating on the thickness of thin film transistors, according to a story in The Elec. That leaves only LG and Samsung as Apple’s only options.

iPhone 14 Touch ID

The return of Touch ID to the iPhone 14 will be a major upgrade above previous models. Apple’s iPhone 14 is expected to have a fingerprint sensor incorporated beneath its display, much like those found on some of the top Android phones.

However, it’s too early to tell whether or not this is indeed a possibility. According to Ming Chi-Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, there won’t be a Touch ID or Face ID under-display iPhone for a few more years. As a mask-wearing time of year, it would have been frustrating if Face ID wasn’t an option.

Face ID, on the other hand, is now able to recognise a user even if they are wearing a mask thanks to iOS 15.4. Since it works so effectively, it’s possible that Apple has eliminated the requirement for fingerprint biometrics altogether.

iPhone 14 cameras

Rumors about the iPhone 14’s cameras are becoming more and more interesting. One Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone 14 Pro versions will have a 48MP primary sensor, a significant improvement above the 12MP camera in the iPhone 13. Research firm TrendForce, based in Taiwan, confirms that Apple cares about megapixels, at least when it comes to the company’s Pro devices.

Advertisements

On the contrary, a well-known Apple insider predicts that only the high-end iPhone 14 Pro models would feature a 48MP camera.

A larger main sensor will be welcomed, regardless of how precise it turns out to be. In particular, we’d want to see an upgrade to the iPhone’s telephoto lens, which currently falls short of the Samsung Galaxy S21. In fact, a secondary telephoto camera with a 10x optical zoom would be a great addition to Apple’s upcoming iPhones.

It is possible that Apple is working on a periscope-style zoom camera that could appear in the iPhone 14, or at the very least the Pro editions of the device. Periscope cameras are expected to come in the iPhone 15 in 2023, according to Ming-Chi Kuo.

Advertisements

It was previously reported that the front-facing camera on the iPhone 14 will be updated to include a larger aperture (f/1.9 instead of f/2.2) and built-in autofocus. Photo and video capture will benefit from the first, while video calls will benefit from the latter.

iPhone 14 specs, battery life and charging

As of this writing, we’ve only received a few hints about the iPhone 14’s specifications. We believe that Apple will design an A-series chip for the iPhone in 2022. The A16, which is expected to be the iPhone 13’s chipset, is expected to give a significant performance gain over the A15 Bionic.

the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13 is expected to be replaced by a 4nm chip from TSMC, which would be even smaller and more efficient. Apple’s rumoured iPhone 14 could stick with a 5nm technology because of a recent revelation that TSMC is having difficulty creating the smaller chips. If this is the case, it will mark the first time an iPhone has had the same-sized system-on-chip for three years in a row.

Advertisements

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple may only be giving the A16 Bionic chip to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (opens in new tab). According to tipster Yogesh Brar, the A15 Bionic will be used in the standard iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max, thus increasing the gap between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

According to LeaksApplePro, the iPhone 14 will be powered by an A15 Bionic, not an updated chip “Non-pro iPhones may feature the A15 in the future, according to Apple. In contrast, Apple plans to refer to it as the A16 chip.”

New reports indicate the iPhone 14 will be powered by this year’s iPhone 13 Pro models’ version of the A15 Bionic chipset based on information from insiders familiar with the matter. According to teardowns, this chip has 6GB of RAM, although the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini only have 4GB of RAM. There is a possibility that this could be an upgrade of some sort, but we should take it with a grain of salt.

Check out our thoughts on what an A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 could mean to you, as analysts weigh in on the advantages.

All four iPhone 14 models are expected to contain 6GB of RAM, up from the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 small, says Kuo. According to rumours, the base versions will feature LPDDR 4X RAM, while the Pro variants will supposedly get faster and more efficient LPDDR 5 RAM.

All four iPhone 14 models will have 6GB of RAM, according to Jeff Pu, a well-known tech analyst

As far as the storage options go, we’d expect Apple to go with the 128GB and above for the iPhone 13 Pro variants.

An on-board storage capacity of up to 2TB has been rumoured for the iPhone 14. We doubt an iPhone will have the largest storage on a smartphone to date, given that no Samsung phone offers this and they’ve historically been liberal with storage.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Max will have 64GB of storage, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max would have a massive 256GB of storage, according to an analyst note from Jeff Pu. If the iPhone 13 has a 128GB capacity, then the iPhone 13 Plus would have 256GB.

Apple may possibly produce an iPhone 14 with an eSIM-only model, according to an analyst at GlobalDate. Users that need dual-SIM capabilities, such as businesspeople and international travellers, will benefit from the shift.

iPhone 14 5G and satellite connectivity

Following Apple’s acquisition of Intel’s modem business, it’s feasible that the iPhone 14 may contain an Apple-made 5G modem. Despite this, the iPhone 15 may be the first to include this control over 5G performance and battery life.

A new 5G processor, which Apple is apparently aiming to include in the next generation of iPhones, may reduce battery usage while still delivering top performance. It has been reported that TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) has been granted Apple’s 5G chip orders for the next iPhone 14 series by Taiwan’s Economic Daily News.

Advertisements

The radio frequency chips are believed to be made using the 6nm manufacturing technique, which could allow the provider to deliver a chip that is physically smaller, resulting in lower power consumption without sacrificing performance.

Additionally, a smaller 5G chip could allow Apple to include a larger battery inside the device. Combined with improved power efficiency, the semiconductor proposed could extend the battery life of a mobile device by a significant amount.

Qualcomm unveiled its new X70 modem at MWC 2022, which is a 5G modem. However, the new technology, which is projected to be a significant upgrade over the current-generation X65 modem, will not be included in the iPhone 14, which is scheduled for release in late 2022.

This brings us back to our earlier discussion of possible satellite connectivity for the iPhone 13 as a means of texting emergency responders when cellular networks aren’t available. Now a rumour has surfaced that Apple plans to integrate satellite connectivity to its new iPhone 14 models in order to improve its phone’s emergency capabilities.

iPhone 14 USB-C

Apple has been rumoured for years to ditch the Lightning port in favour of USB-C, and for a while it appeared like the iPhone 14 would be no exception. Multiple leakers have indicated that the iPhone 14 Pro would have USB-C, and it would be reasonable that the ordinary iPhone 14 would follow suit.

A transition to USB-C has been rumoured for Apple’s iPhone 14, but it’s likely that it will continue with Lightning. Leaks from a Leaky Pipe Instead of USB-C, ApplePro expects the iPhone 14 Pro versions to include an updated version of Lightning that can transport data at USB 3.0-like speeds.

Advertisements

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a USB-C iPhone will arrive in late 2023. In other words, the iPhone 15 might get USB-C, but the iPhone 14 won’t if he’s accurate. According to Bloomberg, the iPhone 15 will be released in 2023, and Apple is currently testing USB-C gadgets and a new charger in preparation for that year’s launch.

iPhone 14: Software

Assuming Apple follows its 10-year-old trend, the iPhone 14 will appear in the fall with a new version of Apple’s iOS software. It is almost a certainty that the next version of iOS will be iOS 16. (unless Apple ditches numbers like it did with macOS).

iOS 16 software updates have been kept under wraps until Apple’s annual developer conference in June, which is usually when we hear about them. Apple’s software development team is already quite busy with iOS 15.2, which is set to arrive in December and offer a slew of improvements to the iPhone.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro

Everything we’ve heard about the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max thus far suggests that they’ll be a class apart. As a result, only the pros will be able to provide telephoto zooms once again. A punch-hole display would eliminate the need for in-display Touch ID on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pros.

In addition, a 48MP main camera is rumoured for the iPhone 14 Pro versions, which would be an improvement over the standard iPhone 14’s 12MP camera. This could mean that only the iPhone 14 Pros will have USB-C connectivity instead of the Lightning port on the iPhone 14.

In comparison to the year-old A15 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 14, the A16 Bionic chip may power the iPhone 14 Pro. A comparison of iPhone 14 and 14 Pro specs might help you learn more about the alleged differences between the two handsets.

Analyst Jeff Pu, on the other hand, predicts that Apple will equip all four iPhone 14 models with 120Hz displays and 6GB of RAM this time around.

iPhone 14: what we’d like to see

We’ve evaluated the iPhone 14 rumours depending on which features are essential for Apple’s upcoming devices. But here’s what we’d want to see on the iPhone 14 when it’s released. What the iPhone SE informs us about the iPhone 14 now that it’s out in 2022 is as follows.

iPhone 14 renders by Proser hint at a new design for the device. Apple’s industrial design aesthetic hasn’t changed drastically, however. In spite of this, we’d like to see if Apple could push the boundaries of phone design with the much-rumored iPhone Flip foldable phone in the iPhone 14 range.

Advertisements

A notchless display is possible on the iPhone 14, and we hope the reports we’re hearing are true. If an under-display camera didn’t affect image quality or the accuracy of Face ID, we’d be down with it.

While an in-display sensor isn’t a certainty, we’re convinced that Apple will bring Touch ID back with the iPhone 14. As with the iPad Air, a Touch ID sensor might be built inside the side-mounted power button.

Although the Apple A-series chips have always been powerhouses, we’d like to see Apple take a more AI-focused approach, similar to what the Google Pixel 6 is planning to achieve with its Tensor chip. To compete with the Google Assistant, we’ll need an even better Siri that’s quicker to respond and more capable of delivering the information iPhone 14 consumers want when they want it.

Advertisements

The iPhone 13 Pro Max has one of the greatest cameras on the market, but we’d want to see Apple continue to improve its camera hardware and software. The gap between the Pro Max and competitors like the Google Pixel 6 and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra isn’t very wide at the moment, but that could change. We hope that Apple’s next-generation phones will have cameras and phone photography experiences that outperform those offered by Android’s competitors. Getting up to speed on the zoom front would also be beneficial.
