The sale of Wordle to the New York Times has raised concerns that it would be locked behind a paywall, but you don’t have to worry because you can save the game and play it offline nonetheless.
That’s correct. Those of you who are disappointed that Wordle has sold out (which is unjust) and are concerned that it will no longer be free (though the NYT claims this will not happen) have something to keep you going for the foreseeable future. So, what exactly is going on here? As Twitter user Aaron Rieke notes, this is because Wordle is hosted as a regular web page — and so a copy of the entire game may be saved as a plaintext HTML file. Furthermore, that copy retains all of the game’s solutions and may be cycled to a new version of the problem every day.
Furthermore, for those of you who enjoy bragging about your tremendous accomplishment (or lack thereof), the website still allows you to publish your score via social media. The only big difference is that you can’t preserve your streaks, which isn’t a huge deal.
Doesn’t it sound good? It might be beneficial if you are without internet connection for an extended period of time and want your daily dose. However, keep in mind that it may constitute copyright infringement, so we wouldn’t necessarily suggest you to do it.
If you do decide to do it, it’s as simple as right-clicking the current game and selecting’save as,’ downloading the HTML and game files, and then launching the HTML version in a browser.
However, this does not appear to function on mobile devices. There is no option to save the webpage as an html file, and when I manually copied the appropriate files from my laptop, my phone couldn’t read them.
However, once the file is open on your desktop, you may bookmark it. As long as you don’t delete or transfer any of the game files, you may access the file like any other webpage – even if your system isn’t connected to the internet.
Of course, being able to play Wordle every day isn’t the same as consistently defeating it, so make sure you’re utilising one of the top Wordle start words.
