Unfortunate timing for an excellent handset
If you’re reading this, you may have been thinking of purchasing a Google Pixel 6, in which case, congratulations! It’s a fantastic phone, but now is a bad time to get it.
It’s true that the Pixel 6 is still Google’s flagship phone, but it won’t be for long, and the Pixel 6a, Google’s mid-range phone, is also on the way soon.
When will this phone be available for pre-order? On July 21. (at least in the US and Australia). On July 28, it will be available in those nations, with the UK described as “coming soon.”
With the Google Pixel 6, you’ll have to pay $599 (£599/AU$999) or $449 (£399) to get your hands on one. Because of this, the Pixel 6a is considerably less expensive while maintaining the same screen resolution, chipset, ultrawide camera, and overall design as the Pixel 6 or 6.X devices.
Because of this, you may want to consider the Google Pixel 6a. A smaller screen and lower refresh rate mean that the 6a won’t appeal to everyone. It also features a worse primary camera and less RAM than the 6s. While it may not be for everyone, it’s still worth waiting for the Pixel 6 to arrive, as greater competition will likely lead to a lower price for the phone.
That could hurt Google’s Pixel 6a sales, but other merchants may be willing to decrease the price.
The Pixel 7 approaches
You should wait at least until the Pixel 6a is out before purchasing the Pixel 6, but you may also want to hold off until October, when the Google Pixel 7 is expected to be released.
So if you’re in the market for a new phone right now, don’t feel bad about it. In any case, it’s close enough to take into account, given that the Pixel 6 line will no longer be among Google’s top smartphones once the Pixel 7 releases.
Also, the Pixel 7 series includes a new CPU and a more mature design with a polished aluminum camera bar, which Google has already displayed. Nothing is certain at this time but the Pixel 7 is almost certainly going to be a better phone than the Pixel 6, so it may be worth it to hold out for a few months till that time comes..
So even if you decide to continue with your current Pixel 6 plan, you could save money by waiting until the Pixel 7 is released, which is very certain to happen.
Pondering the Pro?
If you’re considering the Google Pixel 6 Pro, most of this applies because we know there will be a Pixel 7 Pro in the future.
Because the Pixel 6a is less of a competitor to the Pro – and hence less likely to result in a price decrease for the Pro – you should only consider the Pixel 7 line’s approaching release if you’re considering purchasing the Google Pixel 6 Pro.
Pick up a Pixel
We don’t recommend purchasing a Google Pixel 6 right now, but you won’t go far wrong if you do. As a result of a series of problem fixes, this is a far better phone than it was when it was released.
Adding to its longevity, Google has promised years of updates and Android 13 is just around the corner, making it one of the greatest Pixel phones in the long run. If you wait a little longer, you may be able to save money or obtain a better phone for the same price.
