DESIGN & SIZE

When it comes to design, the Sonos One is fairly simple. It has a squarish design that gives it a boxy appearance. However, at 6.3 inches, it stands out from the crowd.

Surprisingly, every button is touch-sensitive. And, yes, there is a specific button for muting the microphone if you do not want the speaker to always listen to you. Having saying that, the Sonos One Gen 2 is heavy at 4.08lbs.

The best feature of this speaker is that it comes with an Ethernet port for use with a wired connection. This is useful for when your Wi-Fi is acting up.

Unlike the Sonos speaker, which has a more traditional appearance, the Nest Audio speaker has a more modern appearance. The rounded edge and cloth cover give it a gentle appearance. But don’t be fooled by its appearance; it’s quite tall and substantial.

The Nest Audio speaker, unlike the Sonos speaker, does not include any visible buttons. There’s a small switch on the rear to mute the microphone, and that’s all there is to it. And guess what else? The front of the speaker, like any other Google speaker, lights up when you voice a command.

To function, both speakers require a constant power line.

SMART FEATURES

Surprisingly, the Sonos One Gen 2 supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing you to transform it into your preferred smart speaker.

The voice connections operate as stated and respond quickly to commands. However, in extremely noisy environments, the Sonos One struggles to pick up voice commands. In addition, the Alexa integration is slightly better than Google’s.

The TeraOPS machine learning unit behind the hood is the Google Nest Audio’s main star. This chip is in charge of speeding up the learning process based on the commands you provide. On their tests, the folks at Sounds Guys saw a considerable improvement in response time.

Surprisingly, the Google Home supports all major streaming services, including Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer, TuneIn, and Podcast Addict.

CONNECTIVITY

The Sonos One Gen 2 simply pairs with the Playbar, Beam, and Playbase. So, if you’re looking for a seamless multi-room playback, you should definitely keep it in mind.

It does not, however, support Bluetooth. You won’t be able to play and stream music from your phone via Bluetooth.

The Google speaker, on the other hand, includes Bluetooth. You can also link a secondary speaker with a stereo effect. The only drawback is that it lacks an Ethernet port.

The built-in Chromecast capability, on the other hand, allows you to cast music directly from your phone. And, being an in-house product, the Nest Audio responds swiftly and correctly to commands, even when music is playing in the background.

AUDIO PERFORMANCE

No amount of clever features can compensate for bad audio output. Fortunately, both the Sonos One Gen 2 and the Google Nest Audio provide high-quality audio.

For its small, the Sonos One can be quite loud. It effortlessly fills the emptiness during parties and get-togethers. The overall audio quality is satisfactory. It falls short in the low-bass department.

On the plus side, it easily outperforms competing smart speakers in terms of volume and audio quality, such as the Amazon Echo and the older Google Home.

At the same time, the Google Nest Sounds produces powerful and punchy audio and serves well as a background speaker. Google claims that the Nest Audio is 75% louder than the older Google Home. It’s hardly a speaker for serious listening, but it gets the job done. You can listen to podcasts or play music from your favourite playlists. Surprisingly, Google Duo can also receive calls. Isn’t that amazing?

WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU BUY

One of the key benefits of the Sonos speaker is that it supports both Assistant and Alexa and allows you to choose between the two. The overall audio delivery is also not awful.

It’s a terrific choice if you want an audiophile audio system with some smarts thrown in. The ability to link to other Sonos speakers is the icing on the cake.

However, if you already have a Google Home, the Nest Audio makes more sense. It’s a versatile player that can handle a wide range of audio formats. Of course, this is assuming you are not seeking for a serious sound system.

At the same time, it is significantly less expensive than the Sonos One Gen 2 speaker. If you want to save money, the Nest Audio is a smart option.
