With 2,487 awarded patents, Apple is the seventh-largest company in the world when it comes to acquiring patents in the United States.
If you don’t know it already, it’s no secret that Apple has a massive R&D department and that it often files patents on a broad range of subjects. As of 2021, Apple retained its position as one of the most inventive American intellectual property companies.
When it comes to patent assignees in the United States, Apple topped the list with 2,541 patents awarded by the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2021. This is a decrease of 9 percent from 2020, when it had 2,791 patents awarded to it.
Because of it, Apple has risen from eighth to seventh on our list for 2020 and 2021, even if there was a minor dip. Microsoft Technology Licensing has 2,418 patents, LG Electronics is second with 2,487 patents, and Qualcomm is third with 2,149 patents.

Apple’s chip partner TSMC is fourth with 2,798 patents, followed by Intel in sixth with 2,615 and Huawei in fifth with 2,770. Samsung Electronics comes in second place with 6,366 awards, while Canon comes in third with 3,021. IBM is at the top of the list with 8,682 donations.
Google is 18th on the list, followed by Samsung Display at 13th with 1,975 and Amazon at 14th with 1,942.
In 2021, overall patent granted decreased by nearly 7% year-on-year, marking the largest dip in patents in the recent decade, according to IFI statistics.
