The Google TV app is becoming the new go-to for purchasing movies and TV series. It’s not only Android applications that you can get in the Google Play Store; you can also purchase movies, ebooks, and audiobooks from there. However, it seems that the Play Store will no longer provide the option to buy or rent movies.

In place of the option to buy movies and TV series, the Google TV app will take over. “On Google TV, you will discover the same experience you are accustomed to on Google Play Movies & TV with the newest new releases, rentals, promotions, and fantastic suggestions for you,” says a statement on the Help website for Google Play.
Google has promised consumers that their prior purchases would not be lost as a result of the transition. All of the movies and TV series you already own will be accessible in the Google TV app, as well as your wishlists. Additionally, in the future, Google TV app purchases will be able to be made using Play credit and Play gift cards.
In the end, this is only a small reorganisation by Google. It may take a few weeks for everyone to get used to the new system, but it should be quite easy. Perhaps this shows Google’s desire to distance themselves from the Play name. Even so, the Play Store is still the best location to get applications, games, and books for Android devices, and it isn’t going away.
Movies/TV programme purchases will now be made via a new storefront, similar to the shift made by Apple a few years ago. In the past, iTunes was Apple’s central location for purchasing all digital material, but today movies and TV series may be purchased via the Apple TV app, and books can be purchased through the Apple Books app.
We shouldn’t be surprised that the Movies tab was removed from the Google Play Store. Google has been gradually removing the Play Movies & TV logo over the last several years. Google rebranded the standalone Play Movie & TV app to Google TV in 2020 as part of this process. Play Movies & TV was also discontinued on Roku and numerous other smart TV platforms last year.
