For those of you who are unsure of how to knot a bow tie or simply want to improve your skills, there is a foolproof method. Just six simple actions and a steady hand are all that’s needed to get the job done. check out our instructions below for the whole process.

How to knot a bow tie

  1. First, make the right-side of the bow tie a fraction of an inch longer than the left-side. You’re looking for a variance in length of around 2-3 inches.
  2. Now you’ll want to take the longer end and cross it over the shorter end, before bringing the longer end under and over the top of the neck loop. The process is quite similar to that of tying a simple knot at this stage.
  3. Using a single zig-zag pattern, fold the shorter length right and then left, allowing the end to form the bow shape and hold it horizontally. 3.
  4. Place the longer end of your premature bow tie form over the top and middle of the shorter end. At this point, it should resemble the letter ‘T’ in capital letters.
  5. At this point, you’ll want to repeat step three for the longer end, just as you did for the shorter length. 6. To do this, fold it towards your chest and hold on to the fold with your other hand.
  6. With your longer end still tucked through the loop behind the shorter end, continue to hold the piece by the fold.
  7. Pull on both sides of the bow to tighten it and make any required adjustments.

Tip for tying a bow tie

  • Keep an eye on the size – for advice, your bow tie should be around the same width as your face.
  • Make sure it’s snug but not too tight – you don’t want the dreaded gap between your bow and your neck to appear.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to learn how to tie a bow tie if you have a special occasion on the calendar. Practice makes perfect. Allow yourself plenty of time to refine this technique.
  • Do not machine wash your bow tie – If your bow tie needs to be refreshed, take it to the dry cleaners or wash it by hand if the care label specifies that this is OK. A bow tie may be damaged and faded if it is washed in the washing machine.
