According to a fresh report, the Google Pixel Fold is expected to be released this year. A number of other firms are expected to release folding phones this year as well, so Samsung isn’t the only one.

According to display expert Ross Young, manufacture of the foldable Pixel’s panels will begin in Q3 of this year, with the phone’s debut taking place in Q4. It’s probable that Google may have an event for the Pixel Fold and the expected Pixel 7 at the same time this year, given that the Pixel 6 series debuted in October of last year. It’s a date that Young himself gave when questioned about the introduction of the Pixel Fold.

Rumors have circulated that Google discontinued its foldable phone project (also possibly called the Pixel Notepad). Young’s subsequent tweets clarify that Google did cancel an order for foldable display panels, so possibly the sources for the prior speculations were confused.

Pixel Fold’s external display is “smaller than the Fold 3 or 4,” according to Young. Alternatively, it might suggest that the phone has a squarer exterior display like the Oppo Find N, or it could be a smaller version of Samsung’s tall and thin Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Rumors about the Pixel Fold’s specifications are still scarce. One 12MP camera on the back and two 8MP cameras on the front have been rumoured, and it’s likely that Google’s Tensor processor will power it. The Pixel Fold is expected to run on Android 13, and the developer beta for that version may reveal evidence of its existence.

Also, in another tweet from Young, he talks about several upcoming foldables we should be excited about.

In addition to Google and the expected Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo are all expected to release new foldables this year. The long-rumored iPhone Flip may also be in Apple’s future plans, according to Young. When DSCC issues its next research on the foldable phone industry, we can’t wait to learn more about Young’s company’s findings.
