According to Google’s announcement, the new Chrome OS Flex system would allow schools and companies to operate Chrome OS on ageing Macs and PCs.
Google said in a blog post on Tuesday:
Chrome OS for PCs and Macs is now available for early access, and we couldn’t be happier to share it with you. For PCs and Macs, Chrome OS Flex is the cloud first, fast, easy to manage, and safe operating system. Find out more about it in the sections below, give it a try, and give us your opinion so we can improve it.
Google’s Chrome OS Flex aims to address the difficulties of end-user computing that afflict both schools and companies, such as poor boot times; updates; security; legacy device management; and more. Because to Google’s purchase of Neverware in 2020, they’ve been able to construct this system.
Free and completely compatible with Google’s cloud management service, Chrome OS Flex “modernises devices you already possess, enabling you to enjoy the advantages of Chrome OS on PCs and Macs,” according to a Google statement.
In addition to online applications and virtualization, you’ll get rapid USB or network installations and security protection. Using the same code base as Chrome OS, Chrome OS Flex is now available for testing and feedback. A USB drive and a computer or Mac are all that is required to get started.
In the wake of Apple’s switch to its own in-house Apple processors, Chrome OS Flex may be able to breathe new life into older Macs, particularly those powered by Intel CPUs, which are currently being phased out in favour of Apple’s own in-house Apple chips (2021).
At a March Spring event next month, Apple is anticipated to unveil a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 processors.
