In the grand scheme of things, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum may only be a footnote in gaming history, but it will be an exceedingly fascinating footnote. Tolkien’s great works (not Peter Jackson’s overblown, bombastic blockbusters) are the inspiration for this stealth game, which first showed off some pictures back in May 2020. For the first time ever, it showcased graphics from the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The release date for LOTR: Gollum has finally been confirmed: September 1, 2022.

According to a press release from Daedalic Entertainment, the announcement is as simple as it sounds. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on September 1, with a Nintendo Switch version following later in the year. To pre-order the game, you’ll have to wait a little longer because the price hasn’t been announced yet.

Daedalic’s screenshots of LOTR: Gollum from roughly two years ago first drew players’ interest. The game was going to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and no one has seen a screenshot of a next-generation console game until then. Still, it isn’t obvious if the screenshots in question were taken from a next-generation console or a powerful PC. No matter how you look at it, they’ve gotten the attention of the gaming community. Of course, we then found that LOTR: Gollum will also be released for consoles from the previous generation.

No next-gen launch title has been announced for LOTR: Gollum, despite the early release of screenshots. Earlier this year, Tom’s Guide had a chance to see the game in action, and it looks like a decent stealth adventure. Furthermore, Daedalic anticipates a comprehensive LOTR game series if this one is a success; they’ll be able to explore other aspects of Tolkien’s works.

Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann told Tom’s Guide, “We’re discussing about a game franchise.” This is the first game in a planned series called “Gollum”. It is possible that there will be a third game.

Video game releases in 2022 have been rather quiet after a flurry in February and March, and this summer looks to continue the trend. LOTR: Gollum’s September 1 release could help kick-start a more intriguing fall release season.
