TCL has unveiled affordable 5G phones, which will be available on Verizon and T-Mobile

TCL announced some new handsets during CES 2022, despite the fact that CES isn’t usually a big event for phones. There are two upcoming TCL phones worth noting for smartphone buyers in the United States: the TCL 30 XE and TCL 30 V.

Both of these phones have 5G and offer higher-end specs for a much lower price. In fact, TCL claims that its goal is to bring 5G to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

That’s admirable, even if neither the TCL 30 XE nor the TCL 30 V appear to be buzz-worthy. Customers looking for the best 5G phones that are also affordable will have more options once the TCL devices arrive and compete with the budget 5G handsets offered by Samsung and OnePlus.

The specifications for the TCL 5G phones appear to be a bit confusing at first glance. For example, why is it that the 30 XE, which is clearly the entry-level model, has the 90Hz display? And we’re calling it now: the TCL 30 XE’s cameras aren’t going to wow you. When we see depth and macro sensors, we lose a little faith in the device. TCL did not also specify the rate at which the 30 XE charges (while stating 18W for the 30 V). That’s strange.

TCL may not have the same clout as Samsung, but the budget phone market is an excellent place to establish a brand. People in that market are in desperate need of high-end features, so it’s encouraging to see more companies prioritise that market. It’s anyone’s guess whether these two phones accomplish what they set out to do.

More information about these phones, including pricing for the TCL 30 CE and TCL 30 V, should become available in the coming weeks. The TCL 30 XE is expected to cost less than $300, while the TCL 30 V may cost slightly more due to support for Verizon’s mmWave 5G network (which is getting a significant upgrade this month). Phones with that honour typically cost more because Verizon charges a fee for licencing.

Time will tell if these TCL phones are successful, but we hope to get our hands on them so we can test them. Budget phones aren’t always exciting, but we shouldn’t always go for the best money can buy. Sometimes all you need is a basic phone with a few extra features.
