WhatsApp Web app is now able to make audio calls through the messaging app’s built-in functionality.

The online version of WhatsApp will soon allow users to conduct audio calls. Select users will be able to utilise the new function. WhatsApp disclosed its intentions for web and desktop video and voice calling in October 2020. The beta testers and some non-beta testers received the new functionality at the same time. However, WhatsApp plans to provide the service to a wider audience in the near future.

You can see a screenshot of the functionality in Mukul Sharma’s blog post. The video and voice call icon can be seen next to the search symbol at the top of the chat window in the image provided by Sharma. Sharma’s tweet suggests that non-beta users will soon be able to utilise the functionality that beta members have access to. A browser rather than a web app seemed to have this functionality.

Additionally, WhatsApp has begun to roll out a new voice call interface. A look at the Android beta app reveals the redesigned UI. Only a few beta testers have access to the new version. The remaining beta testers will be able to access it in the following days.

In a report by Wabetainfo, WhatsApp is not just reworking the caller interface for individual conversations, but group calls will also be redesigned. Group voice calls, as seen in the screenshots, bring the waveforms of all participants’ voices. In the following days and weeks, Wabetainfor said that the new version will begin rolling out to Android beta testers. The new UI has yet to be seen in the iOS beta version, but the features tracker indicates that WhatsApp may do so in a future update as well, including to WhatsApp itself.

This beta already has the option to utilise wallpaper for phone calls, according to the source, and it also has the functionality to enhance the user experience while making voice calls. For the time being, users will be unable to personalise their experience.
