Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4’s most intriguing camera, its under-display camera, has been suggested for an upgrade.
According to Yogesh Brar, the under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will have a resolution of up to 16MP. (Opens in new tab) It would be a significant improvement over the 4MP camera on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-display camera.
For a 2021 premium smartphone camera, 4MP is very low resolution, and as expected, it took poor quality images and videos. With a resolution of 16 megapixels, the front-facing camera could produce better-quality images this time around.
However, there is still the issue of photographing via a display. While phones like the ZTE Axon 30 have tried for a few years to get it right, the images still seem odd because extra layers are blocking the camera sensor from seeing light. Despite some suspicions of a second camera hidden behind the display, it appears that the device will stick with the traditional punch-hole design and employ a 10MP sensor for the exterior camera. You can still snap normal selfies and video calls in high quality even if you don’t receive the benefit of the large internal display when using it.
Brar’s tweet confirms that even more improvements are on the way for the cameras in the back. With a 12MP telephoto lens, the Z Fold 4 will have a 3x optical zoom camera like the S22’s 10MP telephoto lens, but with a 50MP primary camera.
The Z Fold 4 will run Android 12, not Android 13, as previously reported by another source, as Brar also pointed out. Google likes to keep the latest version of Android back to debut with its flagship phone, which this year will be the Pixel 7, which is scheduled for an October launch. Android 12 makes a lot more sense given this timing.
On the outside, the Z Fold 4 has a 6.2-inch display; on the inside, it has a 7.6-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Some additional leaks, however, suggest that the screens themselves may be redesigned to be shorter and wider in order to provide a more comfortable viewing and holding experience.
The Z Fold 4 is expected to include a 4,400 mAh battery and a 25W charger on the inside, according to Brar. Let’s hope instead that the rumoured Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset will deliver both greater efficiency and additional processing power for the Z Fold 3.
In addition to that CPU, 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage will reportedly be available. Except for the additional 16GB RAM option, these are nearly identical as the Z Fold 3. App multitasking on the larger inner display would benefit greatly from additional RAM.
