Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 — rumors and what we expect

Samsung’s next low-cost foldable device that is Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has our expectations up.

After the release of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 this past summer, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will have a lot to live up to. Samsung improved its clamshell-style foldable phone and introduced a far more acceptable $999 starting price with that variant.

However, there is always opportunity for improvement, particularly in the foldable phone area. Samsung has a lot of room to improve the Galaxy Z Flip 3 when it launches a new version later this year. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 might, like its predecessor, be a game changer in terms of both battery life and durability.

If the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is to become one of the greatest foldable phones on the market, we’ve compiled what we’ve heard and what we’d want to see from it.

Price and availability information about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 are still being gathered

As of right now, we can only go off of the past, but we expect Samsung will have an Unpacked event for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 in August. It is possible that Samsung is trying to give itself some time before Apple’s iPhone 14 launches in September by launching the Galaxy Z phones in the middle of the year instead of the Note.

We don’t expect Samsung to change the pricing of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 any time soon. Moreover, the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s $999 beginning price was one of its most distinguishing features. Samsung has to lower the cost of its foldables if it hopes to get more consumers to buy them.

Rumors and news about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is still a mystery, but a report suggests that Samsung may stick with the same internal and exterior screens of the Galaxy Z Flip 3: 6.7-inch and 1.9-inch, respectively. Considering the Flip 3’s design is excellent and the external display is quite handy, this makes sense.

A variant of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 featuring an under-display camera has also been rumoured, according to the aforementioned reports from Samsung. The one on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is so bad, we can only pray that it isn’t the final one. According to the leak’s source, Samsung is considering redesigning the hinge of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to reduce the overall weight of the device. We only want to see a design like that of the Oppo Find N, which has no gaps.

A 3,300mAh battery is now said to be in place for the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which would be the same as the Flip 3. The Flip’s lack of battery life is one of its main flaws, so unless Samsung has a secret weapon, that may be a massive disappointment.

What we’d want to see in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4:

As an upgrade to the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung delivered a solid product with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, it was far from ideal. With the debut of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, we believe Samsung should fix some of these shortcomings.

Battery life is improved.

Sadly, there was no way to extend the battery life of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. In Tom’s Guide’s battery life test, the adaptive refresh rate setting didn’t even last six hours. That’s a bad sign. The 120Hz internal screens and the bigger cover display, which all consume more power, were a contributing factor, we believe. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 comes with a built-in charger, which we praised in our review.

Improved battery life is something we’d want to see on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Samsung may not be able to meet this simple requirement unless they increase the size of their power packs. There isn’t much hope that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will improve matters on its own in terms of power efficiency.

Increased robustness

There have been instances of Galaxy Z Flip 3 handsets breaking after a few months of purchase, despite Samsung making significant improvements to the durability of its last series of foldables. Even while we can’t corroborate these claims with our own experience, hearing that phones don’t last a year is troubling. The foldables industry still has a long way to go in this regard as well.

It would be fantastic if the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s durability and lifespan continued to improve. For $999, you don’t want to buy a phone that breaks within a year, much alone a few months.

Hinge with no gaps

A significant area in which Oppo beat Samsung in the foldable phone market is the hinge design, which the Korean company pioneered. The hinge of the Oppo Find N is gapless. The internal screens should be protected from dust and damage since there is no space between the displays at the hinge.

A gapless hinge would be ideal for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. Samsung should learn from Oppo’s example.

Increased speed of recharging

Wired charging on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is woefully sluggish compared to the industry and even more so for phones that cost more than $1,000. Flip 3’s battery life was so awful that we wanted it to charge significantly quicker than the OnePlus 9 Pro, which can charge at 65W.

In order for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 to compete with the Galaxy S22, it needs have at least 25W of power. A 45W wired charging is used for both of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22 Plus.

A wide-angle lens

Samsung omitted a telephoto lens on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 presumably to keep prices down. There was a primary camera and a wide-angle camera on this phone. When compared to the $999 Galaxy S22 Plus, which has a 3x telephoto lens, the Flip 3’s absence of one stands out.

Even if it just has a 2x or 2.5x zoom, a telephoto lens for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is something we’d want to see. Samsung may have a hard time justifying the loss of camera capability while making the switch to a foldable phone.
