On Saturday morning, a dump truck hit and killed Dwayne Haskins, a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and a candidate for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, as he attempted to cross a roadway in South Florida, authorities said.
Last month, the Steelers re-signed Haskins, who was 24 at the time.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Haskins was struck by a dump truck as he attempted to cross westbound lanes of Interstate 595 near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Broward County. The patrol said the incident was reported just after 6:30 a.m.
The highway police reported in a press statement that he had been “walking on (the highway) for unclear reasons.”
The cause of the tragedy was not immediately known. Instagram posts from Haskins and Steelers running back Najee Harris show him working out with some of his teammates in South Florida only a few days ago.
The league and beyond were shocked to learn of Haskins’ passing.

Steelers third-string quarterback Dwayne Haskins re-signed with the team on a one-year deal last month, as he prepares to start his fourth season in the league.

After being taken with the 15th overall choice in this year’s NFL Draft, Washington decided to take Haskins. The Washington Redskins dismissed Haskins in December 2020, the conclusion of his second season, after he appeared in 16 games and started 13 of them.
His contract was terminated by the Steelers in January 2021, however he did not play any games for the team. Rudolph and new Steelers acquisition Mitchell Trubisky were expected to challenge Haskins for a spot on the depth chart this season.
Despite only knowing Haskins for a short time, Roethlisberger described him as “a young guy who didn’t appear to have a terrible day” on Twitter.

‘Heartbroken to the core’
Shock and condolences were expressed by the Washington Commandos, Ohio State, and other players who witnessed this tragedy.
Cameron Heyward, a Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman, wrote, “Dwayne meant so much to so many.”
“His grin was contagious and he was a man you wanted to be around,” stated Hewyard. “We are all in disbelief at the loss of our beloved son. He will be sorely missed by all of us as well. We gave up on you much too soon. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to meet you. DH is no more.”
He was “very devastated” to learn of Haskins’ demise, Rivera, Haskins’ second head coach in Washington, said Saturday.
He was “an exceptionally gifted young kid with a bright future ahead of him,” according to Rivera’s statement. “As a result of the tragic events that have occurred, I am at a loss for words. “He will be much missed,” I can say on behalf of our whole staff.”

The Ohio State University community is “heartbroken,” head coach Ryan Day tweeted.

Dwayne Haskins died Saturday morning, and Ohio State sports published a statement stating they were “terribly grieved.”

Haskins passed for 2,804 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 16 games for the Washington Redskins during his NFL career.
