How can I continue watching Star Trek Deep Space Nine if it is removed from Netflix in July?

If you’re a fan of the Star Trek franchise, you might want to consider unsubscribing from Netflix once July arrives. The rights to the final Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine, have been reclaimed by Paramount Plus, which has been quietly reclaiming them since 2019.

In 2011, Netflix bought the rights to all five existing live-action Star Trek series, including Deep Space Nine. Deep Space Nine will no longer be available on Netflix in the United States as of June 30.

In terms of the Star Trek universe, Deep Space Nine was a departure. The show was controversial at the time because of its focus on a more gloomy future than had been depicted in prior seasons. A serialised approach to the show’s storytelling was also adopted—a move that was virtually unheard of prior to the advent of streaming and catch-up services.

In spite of this, Deep Space Nine was well-received and has maintained a devoted fan base in the more than two decades since it was cancelled.

The show’s departure from Netflix came as no surprise. With five current Star Trek shows: Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and the newly-minted ‘Strange New Worlds,’ Paramount is clearly committed to the franchise.

No matter how logical it may seem to bring all of Star Trek into the fold, this still stings.

In October 2019, Star Trek: The Animated Series returned to our screens, kicking off the great Star Trek reclamation. Following The Next Generation in April 2022, both The Original Series and Voyager will make the same trip to the same destination in October 2021.

Only the 2009 reboot, directed by JJ Abrams, remains in the canon following the departure of Deep Space Nine. The owner of those rights isn’t known for definite, but it’s not Netflix.

Because Netflix still has the international streaming rights to classic Star Trek, the situation is still untouched. Except for The Animated Series, everything else is a no-no. It’s possible that history will repeat itself when Paramount Plus launches internationally in the U.K. and Europe.

VPNs, or virtual private networks, are legal, inexpensive and quick to set up for Netflix members in the United States. We should note, however, that Netflix’s rules and conditions prohibit the use of one.

ExpressVPN is the best VPN service we’ve tried, and it’s the one we recommend most highly (opens in new tab). It’s quick, compatible with a wide range of gadgets, and even comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
