Netflix recently cancelled another series after a single season

A new round of Netflix cancellations is in the works.

Another programme has been cancelled by Netflix, further cementing the company’s reputation for swiftly axing shows.

Pretty Smart, a comedy starring Hannah Montana’s Emily Osment, is the most recent addition to the list, according to TVLine. As a self-proclaimed academic, Chelsea finds herself living with her freewheeling sister and a group of three strange housemates. Olivia Macklin and Cinthya Carmona were also in the cast. Michael Rosen was also a part of it.

One of Netflix’s most popular programmes, Pretty Smart, was cancelled after only one season. Although it premiered in October 2021, it has been established that the narrative of Chelsea will not continue. As the season finale concluded with a love cliffhanger that now looks to be doomed to stay unsolved, this termination is extremely harsh.

This cancellation isn’t shocking, to be honest. Pretty Smart didn’t even make Netflix’s most-watched list when it premiered, despite the streaming service’s tendency to keep audience figures under wraps. On Rotten Tomatoes, it garnered a tepid reception, with a score of only 40%. A second season of Pretty Smart was never considered a sure certainty.

The Baby-Sitters Club, Gentefield, and On the Verge are already on Netflix’s list of titles that will be cancelled in 2022 due to low viewership. However, Raising Dion has also been cancelled for a third season, making Pretty Smart the second Netflix programme to be cancelled this week.

An further one falls victim to the bust

Netflix has had a rough few weeks. For the first time in over a decade, the streaming service has lost members quarter-over-quarter, and the situation is anticipated to worse before it improves. It’s even had to cope with a hand-drawn animation by the creator of a failed animated programme.

Following a series of high-profile cancellations, Netflix doesn’t need any more bad press from the media. To be fair, Netflix’s choice to cancel Pretty Smart was expected. Before the final decision was made this week, the programme didn’t seem to be making much of an impact with subscribers.

Another possible factor in this decision was Osment’s recent promotion to regular on Young Sheldon, which is one of the most popular programmes on television. Regardless, Netflix decided not commision a second season of Pretty Smart, and that’s a bummer for the show’s fans, particularly given the cliffhanger finale.

Netflix subscribers are correct to wonder whether beginning a new series on the streaming service is worthwhile. Since it’s becoming more common for new series to be cancelled after the first season, why bother watching them in the first place? Netflix is still one of the greatest streaming services out today, but its frequent cancellations are becoming a bit of a nuisance.
