There was an issue in Zoom’s macOS client that caused the orange recording indication to appear even after a conference had ended, requiring users to upgrade the video conferencing programme in order to resolve it.

Zoom on MacOS Monterey has been plagued by a microphone access problem since Friday, according to reports. After a phone connection finished, some macOS users noticed the orange indication was still displayed.

An orange dot indicates that the microphone is being used, while a green dot indicates that the camera is still recording. A security and privacy feature, it prevents people from being filmed without their permission.

On closer inspection, it seems that the fault is one that has been around for a long time, with Zoom releasing a remedy for it in late January.

In the latest version of the Zoom client for macOS, published on January 25, 2022, a Zoom spokeswoman confirmed to AppleInsider that a fault had been solved in which the microphone was not correctly terminated after a meeting. “Since Zoom’s platform was not affected by this problem, audio data was not returned. The Zoom client should be upgraded to the most recent version as usual.”

It’s been an issue for Mac users previously, with performers reporting in December that the orange dot is visible in the corner of their screens. Dot visibility may be a problem for live performances that may use a Mac to broadcast footage to huge external displays and projectors.

MacOS users have had to deal with privacy issues in the past, but Zoom isn’t the only culprit. In March 2020, it was discovered that Zoom was able to circumvent Apple’s security measures, resulting in a 90-day suspension of new feature development.
