When Max Yuryev dismantled his new Mac Studio, he uncovered a really unusual feature: two external SSD connections. There is a possibility that the Mac Studio’s storage can be upgraded after all.
According to disassembly by YouTube channel Max Tech, the Mac Studio’s SSD storage is not soldered in place and might be upgraded.
Since it is not soldered, the Mac Studio’s SSD storage may be easily removed from the machine, according to Max Tech’s extensive deconstruction video of the new Mac Studio. There are two slots for the separate SSDs, and they may be changed between them to seem modular.
Despite the fact that the Mac Studio’s SSD storage is “not user accessible” on Apple’s website, the company urges customers to acquire adequate storage when purchasing the gadget. In part, this is because the Mac Studio remains inaccessible from the outside. When the rubber ring on the bottom of the computer is removed to expose four screws, access to the SSD storage is quite simple and straightforward.
For now, Max Tech believes that Apple will only provide simple access to SSD storage upgrades in the future, as it did with a Mac Pro Storage Upgrade Kit announced in mid-2020.
SSD storage on Apple’s unique silicon-based Macs, such as the Mac mini (which is soldered in place), cannot be readily increased although some competent technicians have tried to do so in the past.
When it comes to the Mac Studio, it’s unclear whether Apple will ever provide a comparable DIY SSD installation kit. Apple’s language implies that the process should be done by a professional. However, users may still utilise third-party RAM modules to upgrade their iMac Pros, which Apple now allows customers to do via Apple Stores or approved service providers (like those offered by Mac part provider OWC).
