Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty seems to be a dramatisation of Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers’ success. For obvious reasons, the series couldn’t utilise Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime.
From our vantage point, the Lakers’ tale seems to revolve on two characters: Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) and Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. (Quincy Isaiah). The series portrays Buss as being the driver for change in the brand, while Johnson was the court magician. Oh, and Jack McKinney (Tracy Letts) came up with the “showtime” offensive, the improvisational style that made the squad a dynasty

With Adrien Brody as Patt Riley and Gaby Hoffmann playing Claire Rothman (the Lakers’ venue manager), HBO seemed to have landed a great cast. Michael Chiklis will play Red Auerbach, while Gillian Jacobs, Mike Epps, and Orlando Jones will all have small roles in the film as well.
A change of pace for filmmaker Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up), who previously focused on the end of the world or US Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice.
