The sensor of the Google Pixel 6a differs from that in the Pixel 6.

Despite being marketed as a lower-cost alternative to the Google Pixel 6, the Google Pixel 6a may actually improve upon a flaw in the original Pixel 6: its sluggish under-display fingerprint reader.

A new fingerprint scanner was revealed by Google’s VP of devices and services, Rick Osterloh, during Google I/O, according to Android Central. Whether this new sensor is an improvement or not remains to be seen.

When it comes to this sensor, we don’t know who’s behind it for one thing. One option is to utilise another sensor built by Goodix, which supplied sluggish Pixel 6 sensors, or one from a different company. According to the original complaints that surfaced when Google’s fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro was sluggish to respond, it was due to its “improved security algorithms.” No matter how many times I change the sensor’s software, it’s unlikely to help.

The phone’s fingerprint sensor was just one of a number of issues that arose after it was released by Google. Although it was the most well reported issue, it ruined an otherwise fantastic pair of smartphones, as we wrote at the time.

If Google had kept the Pixel 5a’s fingerprint scanner on the back, it could have been a better decision. Having the sensor exposed rather than hidden beneath the display made it extremely reliable, so yes, it’s a little dated.

Since the Pixel 6a won’t be available until July 28th, we won’t be able to test the sensor’s performance against that of the Pixel 6 and other phones until then. Our expectations are high for the non-flagship phone’s performance on the flagship-grade Google Tensor chip, as well as for the camera’s ability to compete with the top camera phones thanks to features like Magic Eraser.
