Is it possible for your Xbox Live credit to “expire”? Somewhat. Redditors recently realised the hard way that $5 in their Xbox account was about to expire in a few months. Gamers, on the other hand, can rest comfortable. Your Xbox balance will not be depleted as a result of Microsoft’s actions. Promotional credits, however, may have a time limit.

It all started on Reddit, where an anonymous user wrote, “My money is expiring??” A section titled “expiring funds” was spotted by user Cg6554 when they checked their Microsoft account. In a popup box, they learned they had an expiration date of July 9, 2022 for a $5 credit.

Taking money out of a customer’s bank account is understandably upsetting. Fortunately, that’s not what appears to be the case at this point. It was quickly brought to the attention of other Redditors that once money is placed in a Microsoft account, it is permanently there. If Microsoft doesn’t go out of business, then it’s basically forever. Even if you don’t spend it for years and years, your balance is yours to keep until you decide to utilise it for something.

Many of the people who responded to Cg6554’s thread did not waste any time getting to the point. Cg6554 received a $5 Microsoft credit at some point in the recent past and applied it to their account. Taking quizzes and playing Xbox Game Pass games are just a few examples of the little amounts of credit you may earn through the Microsoft Rewards programme. As part of our “Xbox Series X secret features” piece, Tom’s Guide showed how to earn Microsoft Rewards.

However, Microsoft Rewards points expire at some point. There will be an 18-month expiration period for “Microsoft Rewards points,” according to Microsoft’s website. Furthermore, you only have 90 days to use your promotional credit after exchanging your points for it.

Microsoft credit can only expire in one other situation, and it’s a bit obscure. A third-party shop may put an expiration date on a gift card you purchase from them. In contrast, the expiration date is only for the code on the card, and not for the actual balance. To put it another way, if you add the remaining value of a gift card to your account before it expires, you can keep it eternally. Your card will be invalid if it has already expired.

When your promotional balance expires, you can always use it up before it does. Even Microsoft would prefer that you did. For this, go into your Microsoft account and go to the area under “Payment & Billing” The first option will be the balance in your Microsoft account. If you click Manage, the site will reveal any promotional credits you may have.

If you have promotional credits, try using them as soon as possible rather than waiting until they expire. Even if not, you can rest assured that you’ll have them till the end of time – or until Microsoft alters its policies, if that’s earlier.
