A recent rumour out of South Korea suggests an intriguing possibility for Samsung’s next major phone release this year as we all wait for our Galaxy S22s to arrive – they should arrive on February 25. Could see a significant update to the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

S Pen-equipped Galaxy Z Fold 4 is said to be in development, according to South Korean website The Elec (via SamMobile). With the Galaxy S22 Ultra, we’ve already seen a silo for the S Pen built into the phone itself. Galaxy Z Fold 4

When compared to the S Pen implementation last year, when the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 3 both supported the pen as an optional attachment from Samsung, this is a huge improvement. Last year’s phones required you to find a place for the S Pen, and a hefty cover was often the best solution.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 would benefit greatly from a built-in S Pen, as you would expect. Samsung’s folding phone, the Fold 3, was fun to use with a stylus, but it is still a hefty gadget. The S Pen’s inability to be stored on the go considerably impacted the experience.

This isn’t as far-fetched as you would think, given that the Galaxy S22 Ultra has established a new benchmark. Because the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is essentially a comeback of the Galaxy Note series in all but name, it’s possible that Samsung may include a S Pen in the device to placate Note aficionados. If anything, we’d be happy to hear it.

Like last year, we anticipate Samsung to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 during its Unpacked event in August. Since the Galaxy Z Flip 3 proven to be a popular foldable (perhaps due to its $999 starting price), we’re also expected to see a Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Samsung’s greatest foldable phones are still shrouded in mystery for the time being. But what little information we do have suggests that the company would prioritise durability and battery life above everything else. The battery life on the two most recent Galaxy Z phones could also need some work. With the next phones, don’t anticipate any dramatic design changes. However, a more square form factor for the phone mode of the Galaxy Z Fold would be excellent. To our displeasure, the present folded shape is too tall and thin.
