If you live in a participating state in the United States, you’ll soon be able to connect your driver’s licence or state ID to the Wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch. In early 2022, according to Apple’s website, this functionality will be available.

Apple, on the other hand, continues to make final preparations for the feature’s rollout. “Find out when your driver’s licence or state ID is available for use and receive vital updates about your ID,” says a new line of code in the Wallet app in the iOS 15.4 beta published today, according to MacRumors contributor Steve Moser.

Among the first states to enable the function, according to Apple’s announcement from last year, are Arizona and Georgia. The company also said that Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah will follow. Digital ID applications for other states’ residents are being developed by states including Colorado, Delaware, Florida, and Louisiana. These states might cooperate with Apple to integrate their apps into the Wallet.

The first sites where ID cards in the Wallet app may be presented will be chosen TSA security checkpoints, followed by businesses and events in the future, according to a statement from Apple.

A driver’s licence or state ID cannot be stored in Wallet in iOS 15.4’s second beta, even though code-level preparations have been made. However, it is possible that the functionality might be activated by the time iOS 15.4 is released in March or April, given Apple’s early 2022 schedule.

iPhone in iOS 15.4 Beta Preparing for Driver’s Licenses more detailed

When Apple revealed ID support for the iPhone’s wallet app at WWDC21, it was a big deal. When it comes to US state and driver’s licences, Apple said that they will be supported.

However, although the business said that the TSA will be the first to implement the functionality, it also expects each state to do the same. The newest developer beta of iOS 15.4 has new wording that reads “Find out when your driver’s licence or state ID is ready to use and get essential updates regarding your ID.”

In the meanwhile, Apple is preparing for the feature’s upcoming release. “Find out when your driver’s licence or state ID is ready to use and receive essential updates about your ID” was discovered by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser in the second beta of iOS 15.4 published today.

It seems that Apple is working on a feature that will enable Wallet app users to sign up and be alerted when digital driver’s licence support becomes available in their state. In the absence of this, users would have to keep attempting to add their IDs to the app and wait for it to function one day before giving up and moving on.

It’s safe to assume that the function will be available to everyone when iOS 15.4 is released to the public. According to Apple, the first state to implement the feature will roll things out “early 2022.”
