Rotten Tomatoes ratings are often mentioned as an incentive to watch new Netflix films. In this case, however, Netflix’s Global Top 10 Films (English) list does not include a critically acclaimed or distinguished film that has been at the top of the list for three weeks. This picture will not be eligible for an Academy Award (Razzies are much more likely).

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming, the eleventh instalment in the other Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the source of this idea (Madea Cinematic Universe). On Rotten Tomatoes, the film presently has a 40% rating, with a 75% audience rating.

It doesn’t matter how bad the critiques are, fans have watched 31.56 million hours of A Madea Homecoming in its first three days. Only that three days’ worth of data are available, since Netflix’s Top 10 utilises data from Feb. 21-27, while the movie was released on Feb. 25.

The Tinder Swindler swindled 17.67 million hours in one week alone. The film has now spent a total of 144.95 million hours in theatres after four weeks on top of the box office.

See for yourself in the new A Madea Homecoming trailer:

One of A Madea Homecoming’s major plot points is the graduation of Great-great-grandson, Grandpa’s which serves as the backdrop for a number of pranks. When family members from all over the world gather together, there’s certain to be some drama and secrets to contend with.

Netflix’s strategy includes both a focus on mass appeal and a focus on achieving a certain level of prestigious status.

Given the popularity of Adam Sandler-driven films, Netflix is well aware of the importance of attracting viewers from all over the world. This purchase of a Madea picture isn’t exactly surprising, given the continuous popularity in the franchise that has resulted in 11 movies. The Wrap has ranked Homecoming as the finest Tyler Perry Madea film to date. Interestingly enough. Though it might be argued that the new Taco Bell burrito is the finest ever.

Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs. Brown, a beloved Irish television character, was another way Perry tried to reach a wider audience. Despite the fact that I’ve never heard of the character before, my colleagues at the Tom’s Guide office tell me that Mrs. Brown is polarising, much like Madea. However, despite the popularity of Mrs. Brown’s shows, some of my coworkers believe she represents one of the lowest times in human history.

Don’t forget, though, that Netflix is also running a populist game with titles like The Power of the Dog and Don’t Look Up… Tick Tick… BOOM! Last but not least, Netflix’s Top 10 Movies (English) list included The Power of the Dog, which received 5.46 million hours of viewing from Feb. 7-13. Source
